El Ventanal Restaurante Mirador

Finding Gold in a Quito Restaurant.

You live in a city and think that you know all of the exceptionally fine food restaurants. Then, one day, you go to a place that you had not heard of and “Wow !” ; you discover gold. That was how it was when I discovered El Ventanal – Restaurant Mirador.

Located, not in Center Town or one of the restaurant clusters in Quito, Ecuador, you are tempted to no go because it looks to be alone in an unlikely place.  To get to El Ventanal, you go the Cathedral and go upward, through an area of poverty, where you might be afraid to walk at night.  The fact is that it is remarkably easy to get to.  The Cathedral is a well known and visible, from almost all areas of downtown, focal point for tourists visiting the city.  From there, it is straight West on Cargi St.  It is only a few minutes by car, and taxi drivers would certainly have no problem getting there.

The entrance to the parking area is on the left, and a restaurant security guard is there to greet you, ensure your car’s security and guide you to the restaurant.

From the parking area, there is a short, well groomed pathway to the restaurant.  It is a pleasant walk that gives you a few moments to decompress, transition, from the drive and hectic pace of the city.

Like many new buildings in Quito, the structure is cement block with a cement facade.  Windows wrap around the sides overlooking the old city and the Panecillo with its famous statue of the Virgen.  Before entering, I took steps to the roof where one clearly appreciates the location. Truly, it gives one of the most spectacular panoramas of Quito that exist.  Immediately to the right of the building and immediately accessible from the restaurant is Parque San Juan.  The park adds to the sense that, while you are close, directly over the city, you are in a nature get-a-way.

Two main dining rooms wrapped with large glass windows provide a sense of openness and view of the old city; particularly enjoyable to see at night.  The furnishings are simple.  It is the food that is outstanding.

After judging service, I rate food presentation. No matter how well prepared, if my order arrives looking like it was just dumped on the plate in uncaring haste, I will think that it is wanting.  As I waited for my meal to be prepared, my eyes followed plates being delivered to neighbouring tables.  Every one of them lit up my eyes and taste buds.  I was primed for my own dinner.

I will not tell you of my food choices; but, will simply tell you that my lady, her sister and I each had different selections and each came presented with artistry and greeted with immense satisfaction.

Three guitarists made the rounds adding a Spanish mood.  They were not soliciting tips; but, were put there to enhance a visitor’s visual, gastronomic and auditory experience.

El El Ventanal – Restaurant Mirador ranks highly among those in Quito.  I recommend that you give it a try.
