This is the continuing saga of Grace, a baby boomer, adventurer and lover of the environment, as extracted directly from her diary, as she wrote it.
Grace is a very good friend who I admire for her commitment to making the world a better place. She lives between her residences in Canada and Ecuador.
The following is as written by Grace in her diary. Photos are by Grace.
" New chicken house
When I was in Otavalo last week, I bought Fabian 8 new chickens, 6 hens and 2 roosters, they are only about 6 weeks old. Today he made them a new house. He had the outside bathroom and shower that are no longer used. He doubled the size out the back and made two small rooms, one for roosting and the other for laying eggs. He used old barns from the shed and house that was torn down last week. He even reused the nails, straightening each one out.
Everything was cut with a small saw by hand. He used the old tiles from the house to make a new roof for the shower half and the hen house. It was a lot of work cutting the boards to fit. When it was done he cleaned up the area and we had a small fire to get rid of the odds and ends of lumber and the old roof from the shower. I couldn’t resist and went to my house and brought out some marshmallows that have been in the cupboard for a few years. Didn’t even look at the best before date. It was fun, they had never seen anything like that. They thought it was pieces of yuka that I was cooking. But, when they tasted it. It was delightful.
I remembered the first time I had a roasted marshmallow, and that was many years ago. I enjoyed giving them a new experience. After the marshmallows, Fabian climbed the Guava tree and picked us ripe beans, they, too, were delicious. His treat was probably healthier than mine, but who cares. I’m going to see if I can find some rice crispies, or a substitute and make some
squares with the left overs. "
