I had just returned from a run / walk exercise
routine and had placed myself at the computer to write.
I should have seen the sign before sitting down;
but, I missed it.
In the apartment living room, a chair was out of place.
The women huddled, looking around.
I couldn’t hide.
It was moving day. I don’t mean moving to another city; but, moving stuff, furniture.
A work at home man is always vulnerable to being drafted when the women of the household get a certain usually unexplainable inspiration to change everything.
Let me explain that our apartment is not big. It is just large enough for us, if my “office” is squirreled away to the side. The location is such that it shows that I am loved and should be kept around, as well as communicating the sentiment that I, with all my work tools and research papers, need to be hidden.
Furniture was moved here and there, back again and then to another here and there.
My job was to do their bidding. I didn’t always interpret directions the way that that they were intended and sometimes I concluded that what was meant changed after a move was made.
Directions here in Ecuador are always a challenge for me. It is something more than
just language. When one stops on the highway to ask directions, guidance will always be given, even if the person asked has absolutely no idea what he/ she is talking about.
In English we have “here” and “there” . In Spanish there are two sets of here and there, with slightly different meanings, obscured further by misuse. Aqui, Aca, Ahi, Alla. Directions are
never specific. To me, they are always saying: here, there, everywhere and where-ever.
It was the same on this moving day. Perhaps my lack of understanding came from my inattention while the others exchanged views on all the possibilities, at least twice, or, seemingly more than once.
A couple hours of careful consideration, trial and error passed and, finally, the job was done. The ladies of the household disappeared and I was, again, left to return to my work.
I’m not sure; but, I suspect that this event on this November day, was triggered by thoughts of Christmas. There is a Christmas themed cloth covering one of the tables and I think
that I heard someone mention a tree. If this is the case, I will not escape further labour
until 2013 is underway.
I call to all my fellow males to be strong, patient and supporting. It will be over by mid-January and not return till Easter.
