Throughout my adventures and , in particular, moving from Ottawa, Canada to Quito, Ecuador, the over-riding value question has been " Am I happy?" .
Money is important; but, only to some extent, the measure of which will vary from individual to individual. I have been poor and unemployed and I've had a couple million dollars in "paper" assets. The latter meaning that in addition to a six figure salary, I had investments, the value of which went up and down. Today, I have a modest pension and great happiness. I have health, love and wonderful friends who welcomed me warmly when I moved to Ecuador three years ago. My children and grand-daughters are back in Canada, happy that all is well with me and thrilled when I visit, occasionally. I have a website that draws twenty thousand visits a month. A writer and photographer in my senior years, I do what I want when I want and love every moment.
I am not an economist that sees everything through glasses with dollar signs. I am, first and foremost, a human being with other important values.
Having waxed so eloquently about happiness; I cannot ignore that we all have an interest in costs of living. If we are considering a move to another country, we want to know what the costs will be.
Here is a website that compares costs of living in various cities. Knowing Ottawa, Canada and Quito, Ecuador, I can assure you that the prices used in comparison are very close to the numbers that I know of.
The sight is named Numbeo and you can find it HERE .
Select "Comparison" from the Menu at the Top of the Page, currently showing Quito and Ottawa, to Choose the Cities You are Interested In.
