" I HAVE BEEN THROUGH THE DESERT ON A HORSE WITH NO NAME !!!
Fabian, my right and left hand man around here, told me that his uncle wanted to sell his horse so he could buy a motorcycle. He was $300 short
of the price, but if he had a motorcycle he wouldn’t need his horse any
We took my 4 wheeler to his Uncle Silvo’s farm about 4pm. The
horse with no name was up the mountain. We walked a ways and then Silvo’s
son RAN up the mountain to get the horse. He was back in a couple of
minutes riding with no halter or bridle. Fabian tried him and I could
see that he had the paso gait, because if he didn’t I did not want him.
Riding a horse that never trots is totally amazing.
He was a beautiful buckskin with a dark stripe down his back. ( Lana, it made me think of
Buck, from 40 years ago). Some-one had tried to cut his mane and did a terrible job it was 20 different lengths and looked like it had been done with a machete. I took Silvo’s hat off to see if his hair was the same, and he was partially bald. We had a good laugh about Silvo and the horse having the same barber.
The horse was a stallion, and 7 years old. They didn’t know if he had ever had a saddle on. He was always ridden with just a blanket folded and placed on his back. I went for a ride on him and he was just fine. I needed another horse that would be great for beginner or experience riders for my tours.
We agreed on the price of $300, but Silvo was to have him gelded and shod for me. I’m leaving here in 3 weeks, so I can use him for the 3 weeks, and then he will be gelded and Silvo will keep him on his mountain until I come back, probably in September.
We were about 4 km from my house, so Fabian was going to ride him home for
me because he doesn’t know how to drive my 4 wheeler. Silvo borrowed a
motorcycle and followed to come and get his money. Part way home I ran
out of gas ! - That never happens with a horse !!!
They left me with The Horse With No Name, and went to find some gas.
They were gone for about an hour, apparently everything was closed in
Apuela and they ended up taking out a ¼ litter from the motorcycle.
Standing on the road with the 4 wheeler and a horse, prompted everyone to
stop and ask if I had a problem Of course I have a problem, but it is
being looked after. But, the wait was good, I got to know my new horse
and gave him a name - he is now AMIGO.
When we got to my house it was dark. We walked Amigo up on to the porch
under the light so I could trim his mane, even though I only had scissors
it looked 90% better. I told Silvo that he was now worth $400.00 and
everyone thought that was really funny.
We put him in the small pasture in the bottom near the river, it is hard to get into this field because it has no real gate. I told Fabian we need a proper gate off the lane-way, he said si, manana, which means, yes, tomorrow; but I have learned that manana could also mean, in two days, in a week, - it is just sometime in the future. But, not this time, at 7:30am
the gate was finished when I went to get Amigo.
Fabian helped me saddle him and I rode him into town to go to the coffee factory, to the bank and to the hardware store to buy him shoes. Set of shoes cost me $9.50 and
Hugo will put them on tonight for me.
I also bought vitamins and wormer for all the horses. Tubes of wormer
are $3.30 so I bought enough to do Hugo’s horse also. No point in
worming just one or two, got to do them all.
I have been through the desert on a horse with no name, and don’t want to
do that again, so he is called Amigo. "
