_ There it was! But, what was it? A black creature appeared to be hovering at my seventh floor bedroom window. New to Ecuador, I wasn't sure whether it was a very large insect or a small bird.
I got up from my desk and move toward it. It stayed in place, looking in, seemingly unafraid. It was a tiny, black hummingbird.
As I stood there studying it, it appeared to be curious about me. When I moved to the left, it followed me at eye level. When I moved to the right or up or down, it followed me. For a few moments, we were connected.
Ecuador is one of the most ecologically diverse countries in the world. It has over 132 varieties of hummingbirds, representing over half of their kind in the world.
