Visits back to my home country bear delightful memories, experiences and realization that I still have cravings for certain food.
Vinegar on my French Fries - A Canadian thing in North America. Ask for vinegar in the USA or here in Ecuador and they will think that you are crazy. Maker sure that, to get the best, you also add salt. If served in a bag, add the salt when half full and again on the top when full.
Poutine. - Most readers will have no idea what this is.
Originating in the French Canadian Province of Quebec, this is a huge favorite on those very cold winter days. Consisting of french fries, topped with cheese curds, then, covered with beef gravy. You can hear the cholesterol bubbling in your veins as you eat it.
Best made and served from a truck parked on the street.
Beaver Tails (Copywriten). - Another Canadian original, Beaver Tails can be savored via franchised outlets in Canada, USA and Saudi Arabia. What is a Beaver Tail ? As described on the Beaver Tails website:
" These deliciously addictive, traditional whole-wheat pastries are stretched by hand to resemble the tail of a beaver, one of Canada's best known national symbols. The pastries are then float cooked on high quality canola oil and served piping hot, topped with butter and a choice of delectable flavors."
"Classic Beaver Tails pastries are covered with cinnamon and sugar, with a sprinkle of squeezed lemon. "
"Indulgent Beaver Tails pastries include a maple butter spread with a chocolate drizzle and chocolate hazelnut topping with a sprinkle of sugar."
These aforementioned delights cannot be said to represent Canada's culinary finest; but, on extremely cold winter days, lines form at street vending trucks, and, for ice skaters, at shacks on the Rideau Canal, Ottawa. Heavy loading of hot carbohydrates warms and energizes the seemingly frozen body. In summer, the lines form at trucks and the Beaver Tails outlet in the Ottawa market. At this time of year, the patrons are mostly tourists anxious to discover what all the fuss is about.
Starved of these unhealthy foods, - My diet in Ecuador is usually largely fresh fruit and vegetables, with chicken or fish. - I lined up, anti-acids in hand, to eagerly risk burning indigestion.
