( Ongoing posts from diary of Grace, a lady boomer, living her life's adventure in a remote area of the Andes Mountains of Ecuador )

"On my first day back to Ecuador I had a big delivery to make.  It was my
God Daughter’s birthday, and I was in charge of bringing the cake.    My
friend Karen was with me, we had arrived in Quito the night before and
hopped on the bus to Otavalo.

It was around 10pm when we arrived at the
bus station, but the driver told us to stay on the bus and he would drop
us off at the Hostal Valle del Amanecer the hostle that I usually stay at.

We had a crazy amount of luggage with us.  American Airlines had changed

there policy of extra luggage and were going to charge us $70each  for the
extra bags, but when we checked in there was no mention of extra money so
we were very fortunate in that aspect. But, we had to carry the bags
everywhere.  8 of them filed with used clothes and shoes that we had
collected in Canada from our friends.

We were up early and bought tickets for the 10am bus, and a beautiful
birthday cake covered with fruit .  Ramiro drove us to the bus stop in his
pickup and helped us load the suitcases under the bus, and I put the cake
on my knee...

We arrived in Guacshi at 1pm.  There were several people at the bus stop
that helped us drag our suitcases through the rain to my house.
We basically just dropped off the suitcases and put on our raincoats and
headed across the swinging bridge in the rain carrying the cake.

The family of God daughter, Narette was waiting, along with cousins,
grandmother and aunts and uncles.  We sang Happy Birthday to her with its
one large candle and then as tradition in Ecuador was carried out  she
was to take a bite out of the cake.  When she went to take a bite her mother pushed her
face into the cake.  She was a little shocked and I thought she was going
to cry.  But, as everyone else was laughing she did to.

She was pleased with her Birthday Bunny, when we left with took cake with us for my adopted family
at my farm as the children had been eying it when we left with it an hour
before. "
